Decorative glass dome

Within May and October 2001, we built a grand glass dome in the courtyard of the illustrious Hotel "Bayerischer Hof" in Munich.

We headed this project as general contractor. Architects, structural engineers and steel manufacturers were engaged in this project. The design originates from Count Pilati, who has been attending the Hotel for more than 20 years.

The ornamental glass dome in detail

With a length of 12.5 m and a width of 11 m, the glass dome spans the courtyard of the hotel. The centre height measures 3.80 m. The entire construction weights about 21 tons.

The cupola consists of two parts: the outer shell functions as supporting structure - the inner dome consists of the art glass.

The inner dome, with its more than 200 individual glass segments, was worked out as art glass manually, in only three months by seven persons. Implementing the elliptic curved shape of the dome was a particular challenge, since there was no single component in a straight shaped line.

The exterior glazing was a challenge, too: it serves as safety vitrification. It is manufactured with insulated glasses, spherically bent.
